Biographical Information
Experience in spinal surgery:

Training at St George’s Hospital, London by Mr Robin Bendall and Mr Philip Cheong Leen, Mr Alan Apley and Mr Gordon Hadfield (St Peter’s, Chertsey, and Pyrford Hospitals) 1975 – 1978.

Consultant at Sunderland Royal Hospital, and Honorary Clinical Lecturer in Orthopaedics, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, with special interest in spinal surgery, 1978 to present. Lead Sub-regional spinal surgeon County Durham. Lead spinal module trainer for north-east orthopaedic surgical rotation 1983 – 2011.

Surgical decompression and stabilisation.

This has been part of my training. In particular, pedicle screw stabilisation has been a particular interest, and I was one of the first spinal surgeons in the country to embrace pedicle screw spinal fixation in 1986/7 using the Roy-Camille system. I was lead author in a pan-European trial of the BWM pedicle screw variable axis system in 1991 (published) and subsequently a faculty member of the AO USS system in Davo
